2016 Bangalore Open: 200 competing athletes showcase the growth of MMA in India

India’s 2016 Bangalore Open MMA Championships further showcased the fast growing development of India’s grass roots MMA scene under the All India Mixed Martial Arts Association (AIMMAA), with 200 competing amateur athletes, including a number of guest fighters from neighbouring countries.

The Association of Mixed Martial Arts Karnataka (AMMAK ), the sole representative body for AIMMAA in the state of Karnataka, organized the Bangalore Open MMA Championships on the 7 th – 8th of May 2016 at the Yolee Grande Hall in Frazer Town, Bangalore, Karnataka.

The event was sanctioned under AIMMAA and featured 200 Amateur MMA fighters from 12 states of India including many International fighters. Chief organizer of the event Prasad Gaitonde, who also served as atechnical official at the IMMAF 2015 European Open and technical judge at 2015 IMMAF World Championships, said; “We are pleased to see such a turnout at the Bangalore Open , the last time we hosted an MMA championship at the same venue we had just under 20 registered participants and maybe not more than 30 guests attending. This event has proved to be a landmark for the sport of Mixed Martial Arts for Bangalore, Karnataka state and even for the entire South India”.

The event was promoted by Fitness Time and sponsored by FitPro. Spokesman for the promotion team, Raghu Hondadakeri S. said; “We are encouraged to see such talented fighters competing at this platform. After participating at the IMMAF World Championships as a team coach last year in Las Vegas it was my dream along with my other FitPro team mates to create a platform for MMA fighters from the entire south of India. I believe that dream has just started to come true”.

Chief AIMMAA supervisor Sharif Bapu was in attendance and reported that all sport, health and safety protocol were met to the required AIMMAA standards at the event.

AIMMAA referees at the event were Samuel Lalrozama , Dhruv Chaudhary and Alan Fenandes.

Guests at the finals were R. Ruman Baig, BodyBuilding and Fitness celebrities Pani Pur Kitty (Mr World / Mr Universe) and Pavan Shetty (WAMMA World Championship winner), plus Super Model Prateek Jain.
